This timeline traces Gridley Wright's life from his early days at prep school and Yale, to his experiments in communal living in California and his life as an expatriate in Bali, ending with his death in Goa, India.

Born January 19, 1934
in Buffalo, New York

Attended Westminster Preparatory School

Attended Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut

Worked as a stock broker in New York and California.

Worked as a probation officer in California

1967, organized the Strawberry Fields Commune

Spent nearly two years in various California jails and penitentiaries for the possession of marihuana

1969, Traveled to the East. Wandered through India; visited New Zealand and Austrailia.

1970, settled in Bali, Indonesia

1971, interviewed by two American expats in Bali.

October 1971, Deported from Bali by the Indonesian Immigration authorities Returned to California. Started a new commune, named Shivalila.

March 1978, Moved his commune from the Philippines to Goa, India

December 22, 1979, Died in Goa
